Sock Feet
That's what I've called them since a child. Essentially socks with soles. My mom used to get them for us for house slippers when we were children. I liked them because they were as comfortable as socks but warmer. The tops were ribbed, just like socks, and they were very colorful. I can't find any on the internet that look like those, but then it's been quite a while since I've worn any. This is the closest I could come. Anyway, I had some thin sueded leather I had gotten to make book mice out of -- book marks with mouse bodies made out of leather, and long braided yarn tails. (I'll have to do a post on them next time I make some.)
I knit me a pair of socks using two strands of knitting worsted to make them good and thick. This is the only way I know how to knit socks (so far) and it is a pattern I invented to make baby booties. (Oddly enough I used the same exact pattern, just bigger needles and thicker thread.) I cut the soles out of the sueded leather, pierced the edges with an awl, and crochetted a single crochet edging on them so I would have something to sew to. This pair was essentially "proof of concept" -- I used some yarn remnants I got at a garage sale, and a ball of thick cotton crochet thread to put the edge on the soles.

I used the cotton thread to sew the soles to the sock bottoms. I learned some important things with this pair. One thing is the shape of the soles. I made these like "footprints," with the toe end beveled off to the side. Although my "proof of concept" pair look a little amateurish because of the problem with the toe of the sole and what I had to do to get it to conform to the shape of the sock, they fit well, are very comfortable, and do the job. I even like the color scheme. I will definitely make another pair. Next time I will round off the toe of the soles so they will fit the shape of the sock better.

On one of our recent trips (possibly Cambridge but I am not sure), we found a cheap "warehouse" shop and I bought a pair of "thermal" socks. The insides have been brushed to produce a thick nap.
ReplyDeleteI tend to get cold feet and so I wear these socks indoors and, for the first time, outdoors yesterday.
My mother used to make knitted slippers when I was a kid. Thinking back, I am a bit surprised I would wear such "girlie" things but I liked them. After the usual immature macho phase (which lasts most of a man's life as you probably know), I am again coming to appreciate warmth and comfort at the expense of macho posturing.
Oh I have got to learn how to knit socks. I have some hiking boots I bought for dog walking and I need some thick socks. I'm sure my Nan showed me years ago, but the chunky look was not fashionable as far as I was concerned LOL
ReplyDeleteI ought to try again now my wardrobe is more practical :-D
How cosy is that? Now if you could just knit one for the nose I'd be sorted!
