These bamboo needles have a nice "hand" -- being so thin, they have give to them, which makes me knit "softer." Being wood, they are not as slick as plastic or metal needles, so the stitches stay put. It drives me nuts when plastic or metal needles slide out of stitches so easily when you don't want them to. With the wooden needles, you have better control.
This is my third attempt to make this pattern. On the first two attempts, I couldn't get the center to look right and kept ripping it out and starting over until I got disgusted and gave up. But tonight (third time is charmed. . . ), I realized there was a line missing (row 4) from the pattern. It should read:
Row 1: Cast on 5 stitches. Place marker.
Row 2: Knit around.
Row 3: Make a stitch in each stit (10 stitches)
Row 4: Knit round.
Row 5: *K1, yo* around to marker (20 stitches)
Row 6: Knit.
Row 7: *K 2, yo* around to marker.
Row 8: Knit
Row 9: *K3, yo* around to marker.
Row 10: Knit
Etc:
Once I put in that 4th line, it went beautifully. It's tricky to start the blanket, working on double pointed needles with only 5 stitches, but once you get to row 4, it goes much easier. The center looks like a snowflake. I can't use my little plastic row markers with this project as the needles are so small. (I've had a little pill bottle full of the small ones, and another bottle full of the larger size probably for 20 years now. ) I'm having to use a knotted loop of yarn as a row marker, and I'm not used to having to deal with the "tails. Now that I've learned to knit continental style, I knit faster. Hopefully I'll get this finished pretty quickly. I've got to spend at least one of my days off cleaning house -- I'm having my brother and sister-in-law over. However, it will be nice to have some restful music playing on my Squeezebox, and just sit and knit. Haven't done that in ages. Since it is a baby blanket, it would be nice if the designated recipient got it while she's still a baby. . . .
